Evangelization Ministry

The old concept of the ministry of evangelization has been reintroduced and redefined when Pope Paul VI wrote his challenging exhortation of the whole Church,  “The Gospel Must Be Proclaimed.”

With this new emphasis on evangelization has come confusion. Many Catholics see evangelization as something which Protestants do. The good news about evangelization today is that it is everybody’s job. it is not oriented toward foreign missions and it is not limited to clergy and religious. The role of the laity as evangelizers has been affirmed and supported by the Church. We are reminded that the Church exists to evangelize and that we are the Church.

The presentation of the Gospel message is not an optional contribution for the Church. It is a duty by the command of the Lord Jesus, so that people can believe and be saved. This message is indeed necessary.

As coordinator of parish evangelization, I became increasingly aware of tremendous need for lay evangelizers who are responsible, informed and articulate as well as committed to service.

There are so many interesting, delightful things in evangelization which can be a particularly grace - filled period of one’s life. I have observed doing God’s work can be addictive. It gets into our blood and eventually is no longer a program or a ministry or even a conscious act; it becomes a way of life.

We are small band of God’s people in our ministry. As evangelizers, we become God’s instruments, yielding haunting melodies. We sing God’s song, and it is a love song. We are willing to be chosen, emptied, formed as His instrument. We are willing to acknowledge that we are called and gifted. We are willing to be the hands, the feet, the voice, the Body, broken and shared.

The Ministry of Evangelization was adopted by our Parish on the 29th of November 2003 during the Dedication of Church officiated by his Eminence, Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales.
