11th of February, in observance of the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, we participated in a Healing Mass and Anointing of the sick,” celebrated by Msgr. Dennis Odiver at 6:30am and 12:15nn.

Jesus Christ himself had performed many miracles involving the sick and he also took this opportunity to forgive the sins of the ailing person. Our state of being in sin affects the well-being of the body and visiting a physical doctor is not enough to make us whole. We need God’s forgiveness in the sacrament of Reconciliation to make us complete again. Before Christ ascended into heaven he had delegated this power to his disciples. Paul, is one among them.

Our Lady of Lourdes is a Roman Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary venerated in honor of the Marian apparitions that reportedly occurred in 1858 in the vicinity of Lourdes in France. The first of these is the apparition of 11 February 1858, when 14-year old Bernadette Soubirous told her mother that a “lady” spoke to her in the cave of Massabielle (a mile from the town) while she was gathering firewood with her sister and a friend. Similar apparitions of the alleged “Lady” were reported on seventeen occasions that year, until the climax revelation of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception took place.

In 1862, Pope Pius IX authorized Bishop Bertrand-Sévère Laurence to permit the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lourdes. On 3 July 1876, the same Pontiff officially granted a Canonical Coronation to the image that used to be in the courtyard of what is now part of the Rosary Basilica. The image of Our Lady of Lourdes has been widely copied and reproduced, often displayed in shrines and homes, often in garden landscapes. Bernadette was later canonized as a Catholic saint.

I happened to be in church 8:00 pm, Wednesday, and saw a big crowd gathered in church after the evening Mass. It was a meeting of the Shepherding Community led by Ms. Corie Gomez and Ms. Gene Alberto. Ms. Corie started the meeting by announcing the dates of the livelihood programs that are being organized in Bel-Air Village on 23rd of February: hair-cutting and make-up workshops. Everyone and anyone interested in these activities are encouraged to list up.

“With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Cf. Ep 4:2-3)

For many, the ideal marriage is about a lifetime commitment to love one another in sickness and in health no matter what. But what if challenges arise in their lives which put their relationships to the test? How will they conquer it? It is important for people to strengthen the relationship they have with their spouses and to put God in the center of their lives as not to succumb to their problems which is what Marriage Encounter is about.
