The Devil’s Trap

Do the devils really exist?
We know from divine revelation (Holy Scripture and Church) that devils do exist.  “Satan and other devils are by nature spirit...created by God, and so originally good, but fell into sin of their own free will, and they are eternally damned” (The New Catechism 391-95).
During a catechists retreat, a priest shared this story with us.  It revealed how the devil strategically lures us to his kingdom.
Satan called a worldwide convention.  In his opening address to his evil angels, he said:  “We can’t keep them reading their bibles and knowing the truth.  We can’t even keep them from conservative values.  But we can do something else.  We can keep them from forming an intimate abiding experience in Christ.  If they gain that connection with Jesus, our power over them is broken. So let them go to Church, let them have their conservative lifestyles, but steal their time, so they can’t gain that experience in Jesus Christ.
This is what I want you to do, angels:  “Distract them from gaining hold of their savior and maintaining that vital connection throughout the day!”
“How do we do this?” shouted the angels.

Satan said:  “Keep them busy in the non-essentials of life and invent unnumbered schemes to occupy their minds,” he answered.  “Tempt them to spend, spend, spend, then, borrow, borrow, borrow.  Convince their wives to go to work and the husband to work 6 to 7 days a week, 10-12 hours a day, so they can afford their lifestyles.  Keep them from spending time with their children, as their homes will offer no escape from the pressure of work.  Overestimate their minds so that they cannot hear that still small voice.  Entice them to use their ear phones and cell phones whenever they drive, to keep the TV, the computer, and all the electronic and digital gadgets going constantly in their homes and that see to it that every store, mall, and restaurant in the world plays non-biblical music constantly.  This will jam their minds and break the union with Christ.  Pound their minds with the news 24 hours a day.  Invade their driving moments with giant billboards.  Flood them with junk ads, coupons, lottery and every kind of promotional materials offering free products, services and false hopes.   Keep provocative beautiful models on the magazines and TV so husbands will believe that outward beauty is what’s important, and they’ll become dissatisfied with their wives.  Keep the wives too tired to love their husbands.  Give them headaches too!  If they don’t give their husbands the love they need, they will now begin to look elsewhere.  That will fragment their families quickly!  Give them Santa Claus to distract them from teaching their children the real meaning of Christmas.  Give them on Easter bunny so they won’t talk about His resurrection and power over sin and death.  And on All Saints Day give them witches, vampires, zombies, and evil spirits to distract them from praying to the saints to intercede for them.  Even in their recreation, let them be excessive.  Have them return from their recreation exhausted.  Keep them too busy to go out in nature and reflect on God’s creation.  Send them to internet café, gambling dens, bars or watch obscene or violent movies instead.  Keep them busy, busy, busy!  And when they meet for religious or spiritual fellowship, involve them in gossip and small talk so that they leave with troubled consciences.  Crowd their lives with so many good causes they have no time to seek power from Jesus.  Soon they will be working in their own strength, sacrificing their health and family for good cause.”
“It will work!  It will work!” said the evil angels.
It was quite a plan!
The demons went eagerly to their assignments causing Christians everywhere to get busier and more rushed, going here and there, having little time for their God or their families, having no time to tell others about the power of Jesus to change their lives.
In this article I am mainly concerned to communicate what I have learned since childhood of the ways of Jesus.  He is our true friend who doesn’t deceive, our true treasure of great price.
Beware of the devil’s trap!
