January 2017 - A Jubilee for Children

The Feast of the Santo Niño is a feast widely celebrated in our country. From the Sinulog festivities in Cebu to the countless celebrations here in Manila, we cannot deny that, truly, this is a celebration that marks the end of the Christmas season.

This year, last January 15 the St. Andrew the Apostle - Young Adult Ministry (YAM), Parish Youth Ministry (PYM) and members of the Paeskwela ni San Andres celebrated the feast with the children from Bahay ni Maria.

We started the afternoon festivities with a mass and then followed by games that the children surely enjoyed. The members of the parish youth had a wonderful experience being “ates and kuyas” for a day to these little angels. The story of how the Santo Niño de Cebu was deemed miraculous was also shared to us all. After which, we all shared a meal with the children and got to know them a little bit more and ended the activities with a Piñata full of candies!

I was so touched with the way the children enjoyed the day and how much they appreciated the little things such as the simple games and the candies given to them. Being with these children reminded me that happiness is a choice. They reminded me that regardless of our situation in life, we should always be grateful that we have a life to live. That simple activity was a nice reminder that we as Christians should remain children, niños and niñas in the eyes of God. I was reminded that although we all grow in age, our values should always be like that of a child - always trusting and allowing things to unfold in our lives. It was a nice change of pace, to see the world through the eyes of children once more, even just for a day. The children showed once more that we should always hinge on the Lord, no matter what and appreciate life for what it really is - beautiful.
