Why has the Catholic Church endured through the centuries? Such is the question which thoughtful non-Catholics ask. Perhaps no one has better answered the question than the noted English historian, Lord Macaulay.

Last Sunday afternoon as the whole congregation was seated waiting for the 3:30 p.m. Mass to start, a little child on his mother’s lap caught my attention. He looked so peaceful, sweet and serene. One can tell he loves to be with his parents. So long as his parents are close by, he has no fears. A life free from worry and care, and in a sense free from desire. What does a child do that God commend so highly? He loves to be with his parents. When they are about to leave him, he asks, “Take me with you?” So also we should love to be with God, to speak to Him, to think of Him, wherever we may be, whatever we may be doing. He never willingly leaves us, it is us who neglect Him, ignore Him, and drive Him away from us by mortal sin. A little child trusts his parents with unbounded confidence in their love and their power. When he wants a piece of bread, a glass of milk, he asks confident of getting it. So too, should we ask God with the utmost trust for our needs.

“Lord, do you really love me? Then release me from my captivity so my life will flow again.” Buddy cries. Buddy is an eighteen year-old boy who like millions of people today carry painful and hidden wounds of drug addiction.

We hear a great deal about “support groups” especially for people who have been abused, wounded

or need special help. Is this an opportunity for the church?

I think it can be, if you have people adequately trained to lead them. There are people in almost every

church who carry painful and hidden wounds and who need real encouragement. In my ministry, I’ve

discovered that the loving ministry of the Word can help people forgive and forget.
